“Glow with the Flow” is an interactive public art installation that aims to educate and inform the public about sustainable drainage practices and water management as a part of Hong Kong’s blue-green infrastructure. The installation symbolises the process of rainwater harvesting and disinfection from collection, contamination to filtration and repurposing through three main steps which are represented by three major lighting sections. Powered by a handle as it turns, energy is generated to light up the recycled glass tubes. The man-powered lighting does not consume non-renewable energy and promotes emission reduction. It also engages the public in an enjoyable experience.
Concept Stage
Concept Diagram
The top green section signifies the collection of rainwater, the middle brown part implies rainwater becomes soil and surface runoff, and the lowest blue section indicates that runoff becomes reusable water after simple disinfection treatment. Finally, three faucets denote harvested rainwater that is reused for non-potable purposes, such as toilet flushing, irrigation, and firefighting.
Plants are incorporated in the design to express the value and importance of greenery in the shift towards more sustainable drainage practices and a greener drainage system. Aside from benefits to human well-being and health, the introduction of greenery assists in combating adverse effects brought by climate change. To adapt to the changing environment, we need to modify our infrastructure by going with the flow towards a more sustainable future.
Comic Strip
We added a comic strip to better illustrate and describe the ideas behind our design. It simplifies the concept into a story, which "Drainy", the mascot of the promenade walks through the process of converting rainwater or polluted water into reclaimed water.
