Objective: A river revitalization project at the Tai Wai Nullah.
Site Location: Tai Wai Nullah, Shatin, N.T., Hong Kong
Software:

Adobe Illustrator
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe InDesign (Portfolio & Presentation Panel)
The design follows the vision of creating a space in an urban void to enhance citizens' physical and mental health. In light of the desire to gather and cycle in the surrounding area, the design opens up a public space where people can cycle through. While dealing with the severe level changes, the design provides multiple levels in between to allow open views and easier access, along with seatings, plantings, cycling lanes and areas to play with water. This encourages cycling activities and gathering in the nullah, in which benefits the physical and mental health of citizens.
The design derives from the form of a natural river. As the site is closer to the downstrear area, deposition occurs and causes meandering rivers to form. The curvatures are developed into various functions, such as pedestrian-cyclist inclusive lanes, seatings, and staircases to allow easy access to the nullah and overcome the steep level change. Planters and grass lawn are also implemented to add a little bit of softness to the urban hard scape. The form further extends to connect with the existing areas outside of the nullah, creating connections with cycling paths, planters and seatings.
VISION -- A Sunken Urban Corridor that Improves Physical & Mental Health
The proposed plan focuses on improving human health. It aims to utilize the urban void to enhance physical and mental health. In terms of physical health, with plants and water in the sunken corridor, the urban temperature decreases, alleviating urban heat island effect and making the area desirable for citizens to walk. It also offers a cycling bypass for the high desire of cycling activity in the area, encouraging citizens to do more exercises given the high dependence on vehicles. Besides, planting would be incorporated in the corridor to improve air quality. For the mental health enhancement, the area shows strong desire for open space with a vast amount of people gathering at the limited public space and even informal gathering spaces. Therefore, the corridor offers an endless possibility, namely amphitheatre, gallery, screening event or public forum, for residents to interact and provide them refuge from the dense city.
